The story of the dish

The Ilocos Empanada was created in the Ilocos region of the Philippines, where Spanish colonizers introduced the empanada in the 16th century and locals adapted it using native ingredients. It is traditionally eaten as a snack or street food, folded into a half-moon shape and deep-fried until golden and crispy.

The name: Empanada derives from Spanish meaning 'wrapped in bread'.
